Development

Within this project there is allot of imagery that I need to create and as a result I have looked through the key moments of my script and have highlighted and pointed out aspects that I need to illustrate. I will then piece together these key aspects into a final illustration.

Below I have begun to illustrate and experiment with the crops and elements of the farm. I found that what might be an interesting take would be making it a repetitive pattern and then incorporating it rather than trying to illustrate a generic farm image.

Below are some repetitive print ideas:

I was thinking about the fact that it might not be entirely noticeable that the animation is in the style of a Greek Urn so I thought it might be a good idea to have designs feature on urns themselves. I would probably need to make the urn more relevant to the site scubas Samien shaped pottery which would be more appropriate.
  • I also had the idea that having my animations move on the Urn might not be a bad idea
  • For example: A revolving Urn with the crops animated and moving which then revolves once more to reveal a new image/animation.

As well as the animation/comic I am also aiming to create some elements to join alongside it such as posters and colouring sheets that can partake and advertise this community engagement project.

Reference images and drawing development

Below I am continuing to illustrate and develop relevant images to incorporate into the project. In particular I can't draw generic pigs but haft to research Iron Age pigs because they actually can vary wildly from modern day animals.  As a result I want to get the best understanding possible so that my illustrations are as accurate as possible.

Roman Road
Below is an early illustration of what my Roman Road could look like. I wasn't sure how to exaggerate the straightness of Roman roads so instead of just drawing a flat line I chose to draw the road going off into the distance. I might still do a view from the side with people walking on it but I think for now this is a good approach.

Reference image

Developing the road and adding the curb swell as the ditches you can see in the reference image that would have allowed drainage.

Below I added the black either side of the road to make the image look less 2D and like the road is actually traveling off into the distance. I like the effect but still have some more work to do in order to fill it up a bit. Maybe some characters/ plants etc... but this is a good baseline for the project.

Below I am beginning to illustrate my Roman soldiers that would be traveling to the area they are about to build a town:
Building up some imagery of children playing etc for the city scenes etc....
